John Skeaping

The British sculptor John Skeaping (1901-1980) studied at Goldsmith's College, the Central School, and at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1924. He married fellow sculptor Barbara Hepworth in Florence in 1925, and they exhibited together in the late 1920s, with a major joint London exhibition at Tooths in 1930, before they separated in 1931. Skeaping exhibited in Britain and abroad in the 1930s, becoming a member of the 7x 5 Society and The London Group. After his service as an Official War Artist (1940-45), he travelled in Mexico, and on his return, taught at the Royal College of Art from 1948, becoming Professor of Sculpture (1952-59). From the late 1940s, he produced many works and commissions associated with horse racing, becoming primarily known for his sculpture and drawings of animals. His work is represented in many collections, including Tate, London.
