Benjamin Creme

Benjamin Creme (1922-2016) was born in Glasgow. He began painting in his teens and was encouraged by Josef Herman who saw his work and introduced him to Jankel Adler. Creme was one of Adler's group of students alongside 'The Roberts', Colquhoun and MacBryde. Creme moved to London in 1946 and became part of the circle of 'The Roberts', Prunella Clough, John Minton, Robert Frame and Keith Vaughan. He continued to paint and draw until his death, in London in 2016. England & Co represent the artist's works from 1940-1960. The gallery has held several exhibitions of his work, leading to acquisitions of his works by the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the Hunterian Gallery, Glasgow. A major painting by Benjamin Creme, Sybelline Figure is currently on view at the Museum of Modern Art in Edinburgh.
