Roy Ascott

Roy Ascott (born 1934) is an influential British artist and teacher who studied under Richard Hamilton and Victor Pasmore in the late 1950s. By the early 1960s, Ascott established the radical Groundcourse at Ealing Art College. He engaged with the theoretical as well as practical application of cybernetics (the study of networks of dynamic relationships) to art.

Ascott has taught and advised internationally and is the founding president of the Planetary Collegium, an advanced research center which he set up in 2003. He received the Ars Electronica Golden Nica award for Visionary Pioneer of Media Art in 2014. Since the 1960s, he has been a practitioner of interactive computer art, electronic art, cybernetic art and telematic art and examples of his pioneering works were included in Electronic Superhighway (2016) at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Change Painting was acquired by the ZKM Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany, from England & Co in 2021.
