Gillian Ayres

Gillian Ayres RA (1930-2018), the painter, printmaker and teacher, was regarded as one of the leading British abstract artists of her generation. Born in London, she had a distinguished career, with solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford (1981); the Serpentine Gallery, London (1983); Tate, London (1965); and the Royal Academy of Arts, London (1997). Her paintings evolved from early abstract expressionist works of the 1950s, to the more restrained paintings of the later 1960s, through to the very physical presence of the colourful, textured, impasto works she made since the late 1970s.
