Ball & Naylor

Ralph Ball and Maxine Naylor use design as a critical, visual discourse to communicate ideas about design culture and contemporary society.

Chair Poetics: envisioning anonymity, an exhibition of prints and altered furniture, was shown at the England & Co gallery from 19 to 30 September 2009, timed to coincide with the London Design Festival. Ball and Naylor have reconfigured ordinary, everyday chairs to ask questions about our relationship to utility, familiarity, obsolescence, sustainability and value. A selection of works from the exhibition are shown on these pages, including Anatomy Collection, a series of stacking/linking constructions, and Chair Archive, a group of encased, previously discarded chairs, ambiguously inter-playing container and content.
