Barbara & Zafer BaranBarbara Baran (born 1956, UK) and Zafer Baran (born 1955, Turkey) are collaborative artists working mainly with photography. The Barans met and began to collaborate when they were fellow students at Goldsmiths College, London. Since their first collaboration as photographic artists in 1981, they have exhibited in Britain, France, USA, Turkey and Israel.
Public collections holding their work include the Victoria and Albert Museum; the National Media Museum, Bradford; the Royal Horticultural Society; and Tel Aviv Museum of Art. In 2004, the Barans participated in the major group exhibition Rose c'est la vie: On Flowers in Contemporary Art, at Tel Aviv Museum of Art; selected works from their Ephemera series were displayed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in Camera-less Photography: Recent Gifts to the V& A Collection (2005-08). Other camera-less photographs by the Barans have been included in two other exhibitions at the V&A: A History of Camera-less Photography (2010-11), and Picturing Plants: Masterpieces of Botanical Illustration (2011). A major retrospective exhibition, Observatory (Rasathane), was held at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art (Nov 2013 – May 2014).
Barbara and Zafer Baran first exhibited with England & Co in 2008: their work was featured in the exhibition Is there anybody out there? (2008). They had a solo exhibition, Turner's View/Star Drawings (2011) which examined two of their photographic projects that dealt with different aspects of the skies and heavens: Turner's View was an extension of the artists' earlier, land-based documentary work, and Star Drawings is an on-going project born out of their lifelong interest in experimental photography, astronomy and drawing. In May 2018, they exhibited early photographs from the late 1970s and early 1980s with England & Co at Photo London, Somerset House.
