Maurice CollisMaurice Collis (1889-1973) was born in Ireland. He began painting aged sixty-seven after a first career as a civil servant in Burma and a second as a successful writer in London. His work has been described as 'hallucinogenic in unmixed vibrancy of colour', portraying 'an innermost Orient, a phantasmagoric Eden'. Collis had two exhibitions in his lifetime but was virtually forgotten until the 1998 exhibition at England & Co and an extensive article in Raw Vision magazine. Works by Collis were included in the Gallery's 2001 exhibition Obsessive Visions: Art Outside the Mainstream.
