Shafique Uddin

Since he came to England  from Bangladesh in 1971 at the age of nine, Uddin has lived and worked in east London. He has been painting since he was a child and had a one-man exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery when he was just 17. Although he worked for a time in a sweatshop after leaving school, he has painted full time for many years, and has summed up the experience of depicting the two very different places in his life with 'I remembered and I imagined'.

Works by Uddin were included in England & Co's 2001 exhibition Obsessive Visions: Art Outside the Mainstream. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions related to 'Outsider' or self-taught art, most recently in the exhibition Outsider Art  at Tate Britain in 2005.
