Evelyn Dunbar

Evelyn Dunbar (1906-1960) - painter, mural artist, and illustrator - was employed during World War II by the War Artists Advisory Committee as an Official British War Artist. Her paintings of this period documented women's activities during the war, in particular the 'land girls' recruited to the Women's Land Army. Dunbar studied at the Royal College of Art, and in the 1930s worked with her tutor Charles Mahoney on murals at the Brockley School in Kent, and also collaborated with him to write and illustrate Gardeners' Choice (1937). Dunbar later illustrated A Book of Farmcraft (1942), and in the late 1950s, painted commemorative panels for the library of Bletchley Park Training College, Buckinghamshire. Dunbar is represented in several British public collections, including Tate Britain and the Imperial War Museum, London. A retrospective exhibition was held at the St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery, Hampshire, in 2006 to coincide with the publication of the book by Dr Gill Clarke: Evelyn Dunbar - War and Country. The exhibition Evelyn Dunbar: The Lost Works was held at Pallant House Gallery, Chichester in 2015-16.
