Scottie Wilson

Scottie Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1890; he left school at nine, almost illiterate. After fighting in the First World War, then working as a street trader, he emigrated to Canada in the 1930s. He started drawing in Toronto while buying old pens for their gold nibs. From that time, drawing was his main activity. He returned to Britain in 1945 and was discovered by London and Continental galleries. Jean Dubuffet described his early works as 'the most highly charged and cerebral, the most disconcerting and fascinating'. Wilson died in 1972. His work has been acquired by major museums worldwide and was included in England & Co's 2001 exhibition Obsessive Visions: Art Outside the Mainstream.
