Nek Chand

Nek Chand is one of the best known artists in India and his work is represented in museums worldwide. Born in 1924, Chand moved from the rural Punjab to Chandigargh in 1950. While working there as a roads inspector, he began to collect unusally-shaped rubble and in 1965 he started creating a massive secret garden of figures and forms made mainly of concrete and recycled materials. Once threatened with destruction, the Rock Garden now attracts nearly as many visitors as the Taj Mahal and is protected by the government which appointed Nek Chand its Creator-Director.
